Question
My dog has been on Mometamax for several months.  When the doctor took him off Mometamax and put him on Bayatril (Spelling?), the ear was not improving.  Mometamax seems to be the only medicine to help, but I was told that it isn't good for my dog to constantly be on it. Any suggestions I can speak with my vet about?

Answer
The Mometax is a combination product combining an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal together.  Gentamicin, the anitbacterial, can be difficult to use long term because of it's affects on the kidneys, which would likely be the reason your dog was switched to something different.

If it has not been done already (I was not able to tell from specifically by your description) I would suggest asking for a culture to be done to attempt to determine the exact organism(s) present in your dog's ear.  It is possible that he has a fungal infection that is not being addressed by the antibacterial or a bacteria that is not susceptible to the Baytril specifically.

Narrowing down the causing organism and focusing a treatment towards it is your best shot at getting an ear infection under control.  Also make sure that a thorough exam
is done to assess the condition of the ear drum.

Best of luck with getting this problem under control.  Have a wonderful day.
