Question
I have a really simple question I hope.  I adopted a German Shepherd puppy from an animal shelter a couple of weeks ago.  I got him when he was about 10 weeks old.  I was wondering how much I need to be feeding him so that he grows properly.  I want to make sure that he gets enough nutrients in his diet and I have him on a puppy food that I feed him 3 times a day.  I just don't know how much food I should be feeding him. I don't want to under feed him and I don't want to over feed him and make him get bloated.  I hope that you can help.

Answer
Well I could answer this much better if I knew what type of food you are feeding.
All puppies need to be fed three times a day but you are right about nutrients. Too many, especially for a large breed dog, are very bad for their growth rate and longevity. Too few are just as bad. Most commercial foods (grocery store brands that is) are very lacking in the PROPER levels of nutrients that a dog like this should have. IT is very critical that you feed a Shepherd puppy the proper balance of calcium and phosphorus.

Science Diet Large Breed Puppy food was specially made to address these needs. Hills has done extensive research on the correlation of nutrients and growth rates on hip dysplasia and other large breed problems.

Here is a link that will describe this food for you in detail. Be sure to read all the links like the daily feeding guide etc.

You will need to paste that into your browser bar. At the bottom of the feeding guide are weights and amounts of this food to feed. It is a smaller amount than most foods because Science Diet is very nutrient dense so a little goes a long way-which means less money in the long run for you.
It is highly digestible also, which means less stool for you to clean up.

So that is about all I can tell you until I hear what kind of food you are feeding.
Good for you for wanting the best for your new puppy too!
