chihuahua digging at ears

My 6 year old chihuahua mix constantly digs at her ears.  She will rub her ears along the floor and also lick her back toes and stick them in her ears over and over to the point that she makes herself cry.  There isn't any discharge on the outer part of the ear, but I looked inside with a penlight and there is some dark brown stuff down deeper.  What could cause this and what potential treatment is there?  thanks

Your problem appears to be most probably from ear mites or an ear infection. But to be sure, you will need a trip to your vet. for an examination, and he can give you medicine for the treatment and also to relieve the itching.
