Question
Hi,

My cat has been meowing excessively and also urinating all over the house and i dont know why. His meows often get louder and also some of them sound like hes trying to scream and im concerned. What do you think is the cause of this? Hes a male and he is about a year old. he hasnt been neutered and i really dont want to get him neutered either. Does he need to be mating? or do you think it may be a urinary tract infection?

Answer
Salma,
you really do need to get him neutered. He does not need to mate. if he mates that is another 5-10 cats who may be euthanized because these cute kittens will get homes first. Please, please, please get him neutered.

And right now, at least by Monday, you need to have him seen at a veterinary clinic because one reason to urinate all over the house and to scream is that he has a bladder infection which can be very painful. Especially with male cats it can cause death. if he goes 12 hours without passing any urine, vomits or becomes lethargic he could be blocked and then you need to go to the emergency clinic.

Intact male cats often pee all over the house, especially if there are other cats visiting outdoors. They can also meow very loudly or even scream if they are trying to defend their "territory".

There are no holistic treatments that will help your cat if it is not a urinary tract infection, but I still strongly recommend finding an integrative veterinarian with whom to work. This is a person trained in many different approaches, including using conventional drugs only when absolutely needed. Working with one can increase the chance that your cherished companion can live a long and healthy life after recovering from this current problem. There are good ones and great ones, and a few homeopathic veterinarians will consult by phone or email. You can go to the web sites for each type of holistic practice and use their referral list to find one near to you. Many practitioners are members of only one or two of the organizations, so you do need to go to every site to find who is near you:
1. Wide range of other treatments: www.AHVMA.org, American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and www.civtedu.org.
2. Homeopathic veterinarians (these can often help you by phone if no other holistic practitioners are nearby that you like): www.theAVH.org and www.DrPitcairn.com.
3. Chiropractic and Osteopathic - www.animalchiropractic.org; http://equineosteopathy.org/ (they treat dogs, too)
4. TCVM (Acupuncture and Chinese medicine): www.IVAS.org, www.aava.org & www.TCVM.com
5. Herbal - www.VBMA.org
