puppy potty training

Question
Dr. Newell,

My boyfriend and I have a new addition to our home, a six week old male shih tzu. We are having trouble figuring out how to potty train him. At present we walk him within 10-20 minutes of eating (which he does continuously if not supervised, so we have recently started feeding him 3 times daily), but he does not go when we walk him. When we notice that he is about to eliminate we try to catch him and escort him to the bathroom (the designated elimination site), but he usually performs before we get him there or doesn't go once we get him there. We have puppy potty pads and scented sprays to help encourage him to go in the designates area but none of these seem to work.

One other concern is the relationship between Yogi (the six week old male) and Teddi (a nine year old female). Teddi has not taken to Yogi very well. She has been the only dog all nine years of her life and when Yogi attempts to play with her she either barks at him or runs away.

We thank you for your time and consideration and any advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Teddi is just telling Yogi who is boss.

At night confine your puppy away yo an area with bedding and newspaper.  gradually move the newspaper to the door.  Puppie usually go to the toilet 20 minutes after a meal so take him out then.

Contact a trainer and ask them about this or research this subject on the internet
