vomitting bile

Question
I have two Doberman's (about 2 1/2 yr old.) and they have started to vomit--usually in the morning--yellow bile. I feed them Large breed adult food by Natural Choice. Why are they vomiting? They are not over-weight and are very active dogs-though it's snowy here and they don't get the exercise they usually have in the summer. They don't seem to have any other probs-just the vomiting of the yellow bile that has now become a morning ritual--they vomit then a couple hours later they will eat or even within the hour after vomiting.  I thought it might be worms-but no worms in stool or loose bowels.  So is it heart-worm or just sensitive stomachs? I'm worried but they haven't lost any weight.  Any suggestions? Thanks! Nicole

Answer
Nicole,
Any time a dog vomits bile it is because either the pancreas is inflamed, the liver is having problems or the gut is inflamed.
I am wondering why you would ask if this is heartworms, these dogs are both on heartworm prevention right? They should be on heartworm prevention year round, no matter where you live or how much snow is on the ground.

This is not heartworms, but a digestive problem. It could be the food they are eating. Natural Choice, like most grocery store brands, are full of junk and are not made with the same ingredients batch after batch.
This is called open-formulation and it can result in vomiting dogs as they are getting a surprise in their system (from a new, unknown food source) and that can upset a dog's digestive tract.

Dogs are made to eat the same thing, day after day, year after year. That makes their digestive systems happy. So what can you do?

The first thing that needs to be done is take them in for a check up or call the vet and tell them what is going on. If they tell you it's a food issue then it most likely is from what I mentioned before.
If that is the case, and there isn't an underlying pancreas problem going on, then I would switch them, slowly over 7 days, to Science Diet Sensitive Stomach formula. Why Science Diet I am sure you are asking and jumping up and down over. Well, it is one of the very last foods on the market that is still made with fixed formulation.

Science Diet has over 50 yrs of veterinary research behind it and is a fixed formulation food- which means it has been field fed and tested for that long and that the formula doesn't change from batch to batch like all non fixed formulated food does. Open formulation means that the company buys whatever is cheap on the docks that day so that one day the main protein source is pork and the next day it is chicken. That upsets the dogs balance. Feeding tidbits at the dinner table, scraping food into their bowls from your plates, etc, will do the same thing. Pancreatitis can be fatal, so this is no little issue.

Wait until your bag of food is almost gone then switch them over. You can also use the Large Breed Adult formula too. It is all fixed formulated. Give it the three bag challenge and get some money back with this site:

As always, Science Diet is 100% money back guaranteed.
We have had many clients complain about sick dogs from using Iams, Nutro, Natural Choice and many others. The fact that BOTH of your dogs are vomiting makes me believe it is the food.

So call the vets, get the food and let me know how they do in a few weeks.
