Eye discharge from dogs eyes

My 19 month male Scottish Terrier has rather more than normal "sleep" discharge from both eyes recently, I am bathing with a sterile saline soloution but its not clearing, any ideas?

It may be allergy related.  Consider an air purifier, stay away from carpet cleaners and other potential fragrance/irritants.  Continue to clean and try giving Benadryl 1 mg per pound once or twice a day to see if that reduces it.   If it's not better, take him to the vet for a check-up.
