Dog Peeing in his bed

Question
Hello I have a chocolate lab that I am not sure of his age.  He has recently started peeing in his bed. I do have two other dogs, but they have there own beds to sleep in.  We have never had a problem with him peeing in the house before until just recently.  Like I have said not sure of his age because we found him a couple of years back. What would be the reason he has started peeing in his bed?

Answer
Urinary incontinence can start anywhere from the age of 5 to the age of 15. It has many causes, from hormonal issues to bladder stones.

With hormonal issues what happens is that the neck of the bladder loses tone over time and then the urine leaks out, especially at night when the dog is really relaxed.

Bladder stones, infections, etc of the bladder or related organs can cause incontinence by making no room in the bladder for the urine. Just fill a glass up with stones and pour some water in it, then you can see how stones will displace the urine. Any movement or relaxation will cause the urine to leak out.

Whatever the cause, the fact is that your lab needs a good exam and work-up at the vets to determine the cause of the leakage. If it is hormonal or otherwise, there are medications that will help.

If it is a structural problem such as stones, then surgery might be the resolution.
So call the vet and make an appointment for the old guy.
I hope the answer is easy and that he does well.
