Question
QUESTION: 2 yrs ago our 13.5 yr old cat had a tumor removed from her intestinal area & has great health since w/only a fever a couple of times since; last time due to what they claim is high blood pressure/kidney disease (which affected her eyesight some) although they don't know which caused the other). Since she's been on Enalapril (medicine) & Purina's NF Kidney Function catfood. We also give her Pet Authority's Digestive Supplement. She's still very interactive, eats, drinks, "goes" & seems all around great. The only thing we've noticed since the change in food, etc. is that her tummy is so round now, people think she's pregnant, & she can't really "handle" anything other than this food. Is this all normal? Any words of advice/wisdom? Thank you so very much. Have a greatly blessed evening! :o)

ANSWER: Hi Mark and Dian, I wonder if she is having some fluid retention because of the High blood pressure and the kidney troubles.  There is a water pill your vet can give you for this.  So, fluid in the belly is a good guess.  If you are concerned you can have an abdominal ultrasound done for her.

What did you mean by " handle " the food?
Do we get diarrhea and vomiting?  What did your vet tell you was the cause of this very round belly?

Let me know...I may be able to offer some supplements or oils for her.

Thanks
Marie Peppers

QUESTION: Fluid retention? Hadn't thought of that. She had somewhat of a round belly when we took her in last, and of course he did his exam looking for another tumor, etc., and found nothing. EVen did all these blood tests and she only showed "positive" for HBP/Kidney. We did not know that there is a water pill our vet can give us. Is an abdominal ultrasound really worthy? As for what we meant by "handle" her food; if she eats anything other than the food her vet prescribed or food with diferent properties, she becomes constipated for a short time or does vomit. And her vet has not said anything regarding a cause of her round belly. But her temperature is always normal, she has a cool nose, and she's very alert, active/interactive, etc., so.......? So are there other supplements or oils for her, Marie? We've seen how acidopholus, slippery elm and billberry have helped her; although we do regularly give her the Enalapril (and her vet knows we give her these herbs, etc.). Thanks so much! Have a wonderful day! :o)

Answer
Good Follow up info...Thanks!
Ok, I wouldn't put her thru the ultrasound, unless she was in pain.  Also, you do need to consider her age and past history.  You may think twice before you do any more invasive procedures.
I don't like to put senior citizens thur too many test and biopsies.

Glad you have used some herbs! Good for you!  Smart.

Let's try a few things- It wouldn't hurt to give her some Cranberry Pills every other day - you can buy the ones with powder inside of them and open it into her food, and mix well... Here is an example of a good Cranberry-

You should be able to find this product at most pet stores: solid gold

Next, I would love to see her on NuVET Plus - this is the Ultimate vitamin with herbs...Please visit the site and read the TESTIMONIALS.
She would need the NuVET Feline Powder - mixed into the food each day.  NuVET is much more than a vitamin/ supplement - It is a healer for many systems....
