Question
My 9 mos. old Shih tzu just swallowed a 2 ins. steak bone without chewing.
Is she in any danger of a bowel piercing or life-threatening problem?  I
fed her 2 slices of buttered bread to help.

Answer
Yes, sharp steak bones can cause some intestinal problems.  I would recommend that you get some METAMUCIL at the local drug store or grocery and feed it to the dog.  Put about 1 tablespoon on a small omaount of canned food and give this 3-4 times today.  This will coat the bone and make the edges smooth, so it will be easier to pass.  The dog will have large volumes of stool after this treatment.

If ther is any distress noted, get hime to a vet or an emergency clinic.
