possible infected dog penis

I gave my daughter's dog a fea bath and left him in the closed bathroom for a couple of hours. When I went back to check on the dog, his penis was really big and purple. At first I thought my family was playing a sick joke or something but when I went to pick the dog up, i noticed his penis was a swollen purple color/look. It looked fake at first. The tip was red like the dog had been playing with it. Licking it too much or something. I really thought it might burst by the way it looked. I could see the blook vessels on the skin of his penis. I put him in the sink and put some running cold water on his penis. The swelling went down (thank goodness) BUT the tip of the pink part of his penis is still sticking out and is slightly swollen. It looks funny and kind of getting me worry. I don't have a lot of money to go to the vet if I can avoid it. Can u tell me what happen to my daughter's dog? And do I have to take it to the vet?

If a dog gets excited, the penis will come out of the sheath.  And occasionally it gets so swollen that it can not slide back into the sheath.  This happens mostly in un-neutered males.  I would recommend a trip to the vet to be on the safe side.  If the blood supply was cut off from the sheath, the tip of the penis could be damaged.  He may need antibiotics or anti-inflammatories.
