Question
I have an 8 year old spayed mix dog...possibly an Italian Greyhound mix.  She has had issues with her skin most of her life.  We have pretty much done everything we could do to make her more comfortable...allergy shots with no results, blood work that confirmed hypothyroidism, acupuncture.  You name it, we've done it.  She's been seen by about 6 different vets and the last one told me that there is nothing we can do.  I am concerned that it could be a hormone related issue as my intact male goes crazy when she is in a real bad state, very similar to how I have seen him act when around a dog in heat.  It seems that she wakes up without any real redness but by the end of the day her ears are extremely red and hot.  She also seems to be shedding alot more and begins to smell shortly after a bath.   This is quite new.  She has never been this bad with shedding and odor.  She is on a high quality diet to cut down on any allergy issues.  She was diagnosed with mange as a puppy but that seemed to clear up and didn't continue to be a problem.  I'm just not satisfied with an unclear diagnosis and feel that there has to be something that is causing her problems.  Please offer any advice.  Thank you for your time.

Answer
It seems as though you need to have your dog seen by a qualified veterinary dermatologist.  If you tell me where you live, I may be able to give you a name of one close to you.

A couple of suggestions.  First, have the dog treated for sarcoptic mange.  This elusive mite can cause long term misery without seeming very obvious.  Second, try at least a month of an oral steroid tablet.  And use an oral antibiotic like cephalexin with the steroids. Ask your vet about all of this.
