HIND LEG WEAKNESS IN SCOTTIE

Question
My 9 1/2 year old male, neutered scottish terrier seems to have weakness in his hind legs. The predominant symptom is that he will not squat all the way to poop- he stands like a horse and poops while he walks. When he does squat, he often looses his balance. My vet gave him an extensive exam including xrays, urine and blood tests back in July when this first happened. She had no real answer for this and within a week or so he got better on his own. Now it is happening again. Any ideas? Should I consult a neurologist? Thanks so much.

Answer
Yes, consulting a neurologist would be a good idea.  It may be due to a bulging disc.  You could also consider taking him to a chiropractor for an adjustment or acupuncturist.

Has he been tested for Lyme Disease?  If not, I would recommend it to be on the safe side.

I am not sure if he is on any medication or not; however, a trial of steroids (or at a minimum NSAID) would be indicated.

Since this has happened before, I would also recommend getting him on joint supplements with Glucosamine and MSM...give 500 mg of each twice a day to keep his joints lubricated and provide natural anti-inflammatory relief.
