Urinating on furniture..

Question
I am at my wits end with my cat, he's always had behavioural problems as he was abused as a kitten before we adopted him.  He's 8 now and every now and then he will urinate on the couch, where we normally sit.  He did it back in January and then stopped after doing at least 6 times.  Then we moved last month into a bigger and better house that the cats seem to love.  It's on a quiet cul-de-sac, it has carpet that they love and lots of room.  As of about 2 weeks ago, he started urinating on the couch again.  Now, I'm 4 1/2 months pregnant and his behaviour is really starting to concern me. I can't clean the litter box as it is, and I don't know how healthy it is for me to be sitting where stale urine is. I clean it right away but it sinks right into the foam of the couch.  And it definitely can't be healthy for the new baby when it arrives. I don't understand, I know he's upset at us about something but I don't know what.  There are two litter boxes (we have two cats, they've been together all their lives), they have food and water upstairs and downstairs, they go outside whenever they want and are definitely not lacking attention.
Please help, I adore this cat but I'm scared that we are running out of options... this breaks my heart.  Thank you.

Answer
He should have a urine sample checked to rule out signs of Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD).  He may have a medical problem such as crystals, infection or inflammation that is causing him to urinate inappropriately because he doesn't feel well.

Secondly, you should have ONE MORE litter box than the number of cats...so add another box.  I would recommend using CAT ATTRACT LITTER www.preciouscat.com  The litter box should be scooped out daily and cleaned with hot, soapy water every 1-2 weeks.   And you may want to consider putting plastic over the sofa to discourage him and to protect the sofa....you will not catch anything from his urine.

Cats do not like change...the fact that you have moved and are pregnant may be upsetting him, and the problem could be anxiety related.  I would recommend FELIWAY/COMFORT Zone Diffusers for the house to help with the underlying stress.   You can also add RESCUE REMEDY flower essence to the water dish to help ease stress.

GOOD LUCK!
