Question
hi i recently got a three year old labrador. He has not been desexed and he is very hypo and playful. Recenebtly he has been snarling and barking at only men when they come around to our house or when his at their house. He also gfets very frightened of them and trys to hide behind me. Why do you think he could be acting like this it is really worrying me that he could bite or injure someone?

Answer
Hi Olivia!

Did you get your dog from the human society or from a newspaper ad? Sounds like to me that he may have been abused or mistreated by a male figure in the past,or lived in a home where he witnessed abuse. This may be his way of protecting you, himself or his new territory. You also mentioned that he is frightened,so chances are that he was subjected to this kind of atmosphere in the past.Try to reassure him that things are different for him now, with extra love, hugs and care! It may take some time for him to gain confidence again, but he counts on you for it,I know this because I myself adopted an abused dog and it took almost a year for him to rid of his fears, but with an outpour of love he turned out to be the happiest little guy ever! If he does get aggresive with you or any one else, you will have to make a desision whether or not he is a danger to anyone and take it from there. Good luck and keep in touch!
