Pressure Necrosis

Question
I recently had an underground fence put in for my dogs, after about a week I noticed soars on their necks.  I took them to my vet and was told these are burn marks from the shock collars and should have the system removed.

I called up the company that put the system in and they explained to me that this is called pressure necrosis and that most vets will misdiagnois it as burns from the shock collar.

The company recommended that I do not leave the collars on for more than 12 hours at a time and to clean the necks periodically.

I was thinking about getting a refund if it is indeed burns from the collars.

Could you please tell me what pressure necrosis is? and who is right?

Answer
Hi Jim.  Your veterinarian is right.  This is actually a common occurance.  The collars do cause burns.  Veterinarians have studied extemely hard and long for their licenses....8 years in fact, on diagnosing these types of problems. There are certain indicators of skin tissue being burned, and I'm sure that your veterinarian had diagnosed this properly.  I would definitely get those collars off and demand a refund.  The company will tell you anythng to "save" their product.
I hope this helps!
