pregnancy and losing hair

My lhassa is pregnant and she is scratching her hair out on top of her head. There is a little sore above where she scratched the patch out. And she is doing alot of scratching is there something I can do to help at home until I can get her to a vet?

Because she is pregnant you cannot give her anything for the itching like Benadryl. Your vet will have something safe for dogs while pregnant for that, maybe a topical cream like Triamcinalone.

She might have dry and itchy skin due to her diet. While she is pregnant and nursing she needs to be free fed a high quality puppy food such as Science Diet Puppy Growth Small Bites. That way she will get optimum nutrition for her puppies now and she will have good milk for them later. Then when they are 4-5 weeks old you will already have the food there for them to start on.
What you feed is what you get so to get the best and healthiest puppies buy her a 10 lb bag of that now and get her started. She will eat to meet her energy needs and when those are satisfied she will eat a bit less. Start her on at least 3- 4 cups a day in a bowl or feed as it says on the bag for pregnant bitches.

She and the puppies will thank you as will the new owners of your beautiful puppies.
