heartworm in pregnancy - what about pups

18 14:04:01

Question
I am in rescue and received 10 five day old orphan pups.  Mom died during birth but was highly positive for heartworm.  Can't find anywhere if they have placental transfer or if there is anything that I need to watch for or do special for the pups in this circumstance.

Answer
Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitos and not through the placenta or from the milk, like other worms.  So there is not a concern about heartworms in these pups.  YOu should have these pups checked for intestinal parasites in about a week and then deworm then if needed.
