maltese sick

I have a 1 year old white Maltese about 7lbs. He is shivering and wont eat or drink. He also yelps if i try to pick him up. He started these symptoms today about 5hrs ago. I cant tell if got into something he wasn't suppose to because i was not home. i also thought, maybe he has a broken bone but when i touch him thoroughly he does not cry or yelp. what do i do should i take him to the vet or wait it out? help not sure what is best. thanks you

Is there any vomiting going on? He sounds like he is in a lot of pain and that can be from his gut, not just his muscles. He may have also hurt his lower back jumping  off of the couch. Very common in little dogs.

If he isn't vomiting and has not diarrhea, then we always tell the client that if they feel it's safe for their pet, that is it isn't on medication that with be a problem with it, that they can give one small baby aspirin and see how the dog does. If the dog is still sick come morning, then he needs to go to the vet asap.

But that is up to you. If he is vomiting, he needs to be seen as he could have acute pancreatitis and that can be very serious. Especially if he is vomiting up yellow or greenish bile.
