Question
I have been feeding some strays and one day one of the females had a swollen face and then it popped and she lost some hair and it got black. She was getting better and then I don't know if someone hurt her but she had trouble breathing and died. The male that always loved up on her now has oozing eyes and start to get better but then ooze again. I have taken a warm towel and cleaned them but he can't get rid of it all the way..What should I do??? He will only let me do a little bit to him. He is a stray and can't afford to take him to the vet. Is there something I could get and try?? Thank you for any help you can give.. A very loving animal lover.. Oh I feed 2 other cats and they have not gotten anything from him. This has been over a course of quite a few months..

Answer
You have a colony of sick cats that are spreading upper respiratory viruses around to one another. They could even have leukemia which is fatal and quite possibly what your other cat died from. Either that or the female had an abscess but was so weak from something else that the infection killed her.

This cat needs medical care or he will continue to spread what he has around. If he is spreading leukemia he can do that by breeding, fighting, eating from the same bowls and drinking the same water. I known it's hard to see these cats suffer but that is why we are their caretakers and have to spend money on them sometimes.

Let the vet know you are treating strays and ask if he can give you a break or a discount. Maybe he will just give you some meds to give them in food but that is doubtful.
There isn't anything else you can buy over the counter to help them-they really need to see a vet and get medicine from them.

Once these cats are well find a low cost spay and neuter clinic and see what you can do about getting them fixed. They can find homes then and get healthier.
Good luck and I hope they get well soon.
