Question
My Schnauzer is 14 years old and his teeth are extremely bad.  I'm afraid if I put him under anethesia that he won't come out of it, because of his age.  I keep giving him antibotics that seem to help for a few days, but the infection keeps coming back - what do you suggest I do for him?

Answer
I do understand your concern, but after doing over 3,000 dentals in a 20 yr period, we only lost maybe 3 dogs and that was due to issues beyond the control of the anesthetic or anything else. Get a pre-blood work up and see what kind of shape his liver and kidneys are in.
Having a mouth full of dirty teeth is causing him more harm than the anesthetic would.

There are very safe anesthetics for older dogs and with a good vet he will be fine. But he really needs a work up first. If you do some home care follow up afterward you could think of this as the only dental he will need from now on.

Having a mouth full of bacteria can cause heart, liver, kidney and other diseases. So get him into the vet's right away and get his mouth taken care of.
It is very safe nowadays and is much safer than the nasty teeth.

Let me know how it goes.
