bringing home a new cat

Question
Yesterday, I adopted a 9mo. old Orange Tabby from a Foster Home.  My first pet--age 65 birthday gift from my son!
Foster Mom said he is VERY shy so when he hides, like under the bed, try to coax him out, but if he will not come out after 3 weeks, return him to the Foster home.
As soon as I saw him and he responded to me, I fell in love! I want to make a home for us.
There must be a better way to get to know each other!  My son's cat interacted with him for about 3 min. and now sits outside my bedroom, just waiting for the Tabby to come out and play.
I know it's an adjustment.  Do we just wait?
Thanks for your time and attention.
Marcia

Answer
Yes, cats take quite a bit of time to adjust to a new home and even more time to get used to another cat.  They do not take to change very well so be patient.   Keep being patient and talk softly to him.  You can use a pole toy with feathers or laser pointer to see if he interested in playing or put some cat nip on the sofa.  Try offerring him some special treats like a piece of chicken or turkey breast.  You can also purchase Feliway/Comfort Zone Diffusers to help ease the stress and anxiety.  Make sure the orange tabby has his own litter box and food dish so there is not any competition for resources.
