Question
I have a 5 yr old bulldog that is suffering from Bronchitis and possible pneumonia. He was recently x-ray'd where it was determined that he is also showing signs of Spondylosis (Arthritis??) Anyway, Rimadyl was prescribed for this along with Baytril for the bronchitis. However, I am noticing that his bowel movements are 2x normal since we started with the Rimadyl. I have heard some horror stories about this drug. Do you think Glucosamine would be a safer bet? Do you have any experience with Rimadyl? He was using baytril for a week before this happened so I don't suspect that. It's not diareah but it is dark and frequent.

Answer
Hi Sergio!  I would definatley talk to your veterinarian about a different arthritis medication.  Glucosamine and Glycoflex are a little more natural with not as many side effects as Rimadyl.  I personally, rarely use Rimadyl.
Any foreign substance going into your dog can cause side effects.  For arthritis, I use more holistic medications, as this is a "forever" medication.  At your local health food store, you can get Flax Seed Oil, Boveine Cartlidge and Shark Fat pills.  These have no side effects, as they are all natural.  I would start with using the Flax Seed Oil first, as this may handle the arthritis on it's own.  Just a teaspoon per day over his food.  This keeps the joints and system lubricated and running smoothly.  I am a big fan of using flax seed oil for situations like these.
I hope this is helpful and if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask!
