Question
I have a 6 week old kitten who I've recently weaned off kitten formula milk, and am now giving him a high quality canned cat food (or so I'm told it is high quality). I took him off the kitten formula when he started having diarrhea and my vet said he was becoming lactose intolerant. But the diarrhea has continued, and now it is more than a little bloody. He has been de-wormed.
I'm thinking this is probably fairly serious, and my veterinarian is unavailable for the next few days.
Any suggestions or possible causes of this? Diet changes I should make? Recommended diet?
Any info. would be appreciated,
thanks!

Answer
I would add some boiled rice to his food as you wean him off the canned or at least start adding some dry food to his diet. The only food on the market that is truly a high quality food now is Science Diet. I have studied their foods and others extensively and I can tell you that you can't go wrong by starting this little guy on some SD kitten growth dry. It is small in size and easy for him to chew so he should love it.
It will help with the stool issue also.
Worms aren't the only thing cats get. Kittens can get coccidia easily since they are so close to the ground. Giardia is another concern but coccidia is more prevalent. You can actually bring it into the house on your shoes.
If the diarrhea isn't stopped by the rice and the change to a dryer food, then you need to have the stool cultured for protozoan infections, not just worms.
You can also use rice cereal if you want instead of boiling some rice but add just small amounts. That will help with diet related diarrhea pretty fast.
Don't give too much because you can actually constipate him.
The blood is frank blood meaning it's coming from irritated colon and rectal membranes. It will stop when the diarrhea stops.
Let me know how he does and don't forget to pick up a bag of Kitten Growth made by Science Diet. I have been selling it and feeding it for over 28 yrs and I have never once had a client return it. They always kept their pets on it for life. And they lived longer than the average pet in 9 times out of 10 pets.
The proof is in the bag!
If you have any more questions about the food let me know.
Take care and I hope he clears up soon. Please let me know how he does.
