Cleaning a wound

Question
Dear Doctor,
I hope this falls under the "skin" category.  My German Shorthair has a very deep wound on her back knee/lower thigh area. Two weeks ago she impaled herself on a piece of steel sticking out of the ground.  The vet didn't stitch the wound since she wanted in to drain and the hole has still not closed up.  Abby (dog) is now on her second round of antibiotics.  Should I or can I clean the wound with hydrogen peroxide (it is still oozing pus) or use a topical ointment?
Thank you so much for your input,
Terri G.

Answer
Don't use Hydrogen peroxide for this type of deep wound. It will heat up and further damage the tissue. The best thing is to use chlorinated water or a little bleach in the water (1 tbsp to a gallon) to kill the surface organisms.  Antibiotics have a hard time getting through the healing tissue.  As this tissue heals, it is very resistant to infection but the serum that oozes out of the wound needs to be removed.
