Female Chihuahua sick after having puppies

Question
My female had her first litter of puppies yesterday. She had 6, seemingly with no problems but now she has a lot of diarrhea, although some of her bowel movements have been normal. She is eating and taking very good care of her babies. She seems to have lost alot of weight overnight.   I took her temp and it was 103.7.  I am now giving her amoxcillin and Imodium, as well as DYNE, a nutritional supplement.  What do you think the problem might be? Thanks, Linda

Answer
She isn't sick, having diarrhea is normal when you have eaten 6 placentas and some other afterbirth. I wouldn't be giving her any Immodium because of the babies. If you want you can add some boiled rice to her food for a few days. Hopefully you have had her on free fed puppy growth food all this time. If not you need to get her some Science Diet puppy growth and let her eat as much as she wants until the puppies are weaned.
They are always thinner after they whelp too. She had 6 fat babies in there.

Why are you giving her amoxicillin too? She does not have an infection unless you see or smell a discharge from her vagina that is light green and ropey or whitish or yellow and foul smelling.

You are only going to make her diarrhea worse with antibiotics that she doesn't need.
Just stop over-medicating her and just let her be. Give her the rice and get her the Science Diet Puppy Growth (not puppy chow) and she will be fine. Hopefully you have wormed and vaccinated her before this litter so she will be okay.

If she goes off her feed or has a discharge as mentioned above then you should call the vets asap.
When the puppies are weaned you can wean her off of the Puppy Food and get her on some high quality SD adult food in small bites.

Watch the puppies every day for signs of them getting cold or not nursing well. You might want to get some Nurturall or Espilac puppy milk replacement to have on hand for supplemental feeding if needed. You don't want to have to run out and get it when you need it!
Have fun and good luck with your brood!
