thick creamy liquid on my dogs penis

Question
I really feel weird even asking this question, but thought I'd better make sure everything is okay.  I adopted this dog last weekend from a dog rescue.  Oreo is apprx. 1 year old and is a male, neutered dach. mix.  He's been with us a week and 1 day now.  We're feeding him Innova dog food with Innova dog biscuit once a day.  He gets no table food.  Since he's been with us, I've noticed that he has a small amount of this light yellow creamy liquid on the end of his penis pretty frequently.  It's not like he's "excited" or anything like that.  I've had female dogs for many years and this is my first male dog since I was a child.  I'm wondering if this is normal or if it's something I should be concerned about.  When I was vacuuming my couch today, I noticed some dried parts on the couch that it looks like this substance has rubbed off onto.  I brought him to my animal's vet 2 days ago, but forgot to ask her about this.  He appears healthy otherwise.  Thank you!

Answer
Dionne,

This secretion is affectionately known in the veterinary world as "Peter Butter" (eeuwwwww!).  It is normal for intact male dogs to have this discharge.  I suspect Oreo was recently neutered, in which case the substance will eventually go away as most neutered male dogs dont seem to have this problem (although some do!).  In rare cases it is called balanopothitis and can be due to infection.  I would only suspect this Oreo had been neutered as a puppy, he constantly licks himself, and there are ulcerations or other lesions on his penis.

In the meantime, you can get a male doggie diaper to put on him if you are worried (or just completely grossed out) about the discharge getting on you or the furniture.
