Opossum with bulging eyes

Question
I have a rescued opossum with bulging eyes and swollen appearing tale.  She acts normal otherwise.  Can you tell me what might be wrong or do you know of a veterinarian who is an expert on the opossum?  Can you tell me where to get thyroid blood normals for Va. Opossum?

Thank you!

Jeanie

Answer
I doubt if thyroid is the problem here. I don't have the normals for an opossum but I would call a rehab center close to you. I have no idea where you live so I cannot recommend one to you. You can search online for wildlife vets on Google, putting in the state and city or area you live in.

Either look for a wildlife vet or a wildlife rehab center. An opossum can only suffer from something like thyroid if it has been hand raised on the wrong foods. I can't find any literature on any type of thyroid issues in possums.

Bulging eyes can also be from trauma, which is a more likely scenario with one of these critters. In all the years I re-habbed, raised and released them I have never seen one with bulging eyes unless it had been hit.

I hope you find one soon. Be sure to search in Google for one! Good luck and let me know what you find.
