Bassett Ate a fish

Question
I just found out my basset ate a dead fish bones & all yesterday. This being said when she woke up today she was fine however 3 hours later she is listless & wont walk. She hunches her back if you force her to stand & she she can make it about 4-5 steps before her legs give out on her. Could her eating this fish have something to do with her back legs not working? I can press all of her bones on her back & legs, I can stretch her out while shes lying on the floor & rub/squeeze her belly without her showing signs of being in pain but when she stands its a different story. She does not appear to have a fever & when I offer her food or water she will take it? Please help!

Answer
She is in major pain and I would worry about it being the fish. Most likely these bones are making their way down into her small intestine which are going to cause her not only pain, but could possibly perforate her intestines.

This is VERY serious! If the bones were cooked it's even worse. Brittle bones can pierce the intestines even easier. I would call your vet as soon as you can and get her into see him/her. They might want to xray her and make sure the bones are moving through her and haven't pierced her intestines.

I hate to sound so severe with this but this is one of the main ways dogs get peritonitis and THAT is seriously deadly.

So to be on the safe side, call your vet and let them know what she ate and if you can wait until tomorrow to bring her in or if they should see her today.

She may just pass it fine, but I would be worried since she appears to be in great pain right now.
