discharge from eye area

Question
Hi. I have a 15yr old standardbred mare. Yesterday she had some yellow discharge from the corner of her eye. It doesn't look as though it is coming from the eye itself, and the eye looks normal and fine. I am wondering if a polysporin eye ointment (without steroids) for humans is safe for a horses eye area? I haven't tried anything else yet, just cleaning it and today it looked the same or even a bit less discharge then yesterday. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Teresa,
I don't do equine questions but I can tell you from my own personal experience that I have used the very same ointment in my own horses eyes before with good results.

If her discharge doesn't stop however, you need to have a vet look under her eyelids. Even horses can get stickers under those folds.
