Albino cat long-term care

Question
I have an albino cat and my vet recently said the only way to ensure he lives a
long life is to keep him out of the sun. Is there an alternative form of treatment
(a topical medicine, capsule, or shot) that can be administered regularly to shield
my cat from the sun so he can still play outside?

Answer
Dana -

Your veterinarian is correct -an albino cat is at risk of developing skin cancer if he spends extended time outside.  Sitting in the sun, playing in the sun and sitting on a windowsill are all ways for an albino kitty to develop skin cancer.  Applying sunscreen is your best bet, but cats often groom themselves with such abandon that the sunscreen used may upset your kitty's stomach if he ingests it by licking.  That is why it is essential that the kitty not be exposed to the sun.  Unfortunately, there are no injections or capsules that can prevent sun damage.
