Question
my female just had her puppies lastnight around11pm, almost 24 hrs later the runt of the litter still cannot seem to find where to suck and even after i try to help the puppy he still cant. ive tried bottle feeding him and i cant get him to suck that either. when i pull the gently on the neck of the puppy his skin doesnt go down as fast as the others and he a whole lot smaller compared to any of the other three puppies in the litter. what can i do ???

Answer
He is weak and has a weak sucking reflex. Most of the time these puppies need to be tube fed. You will have to have the vet show you how to do this plus get the equipment you need from them. In the mean time keep trying to bottle feed the puppy or use an eyedropper. The skin tenting means he is dehydrated. Keep this one warm and get as much milk into him every hour that you can. Some puppies are just born not quite with it so he may not make it. You have to prepare yourself for that also.

Did you look into his mouth? He might have a cleft palate which makes it impossible for them to suck. You will know it by looking at the roof of his mouth. Contact your vet tomorrow or a feed or pet store and see if someone can show you how to tube feed him. Make sure you do not overfeed him once he does start to suckle.

That is about all you can do for now until Monday. If you know your vet well he/she might let you bring in the puppy tomorrow and show you how to feed him as well as looking at his mouth.
I hope he makes it! Let me know how he does.
