Labs Ears

Question
Everytime I take my lab to the vet he has an ear infection and I end up spending a lot of money on medications, etc. We just went for a shot!  Is there a good way to PREVENT these infections from happening?

Answer
Most labs have allergic ears.  Some have allergies to a particular protein in the food, while others have allergies to pollens, molds, dust mites, etc.  The ear is skin and it reacts to allergens just like the rest of the body. I recommend that you have the dog checked for allergies.  You may also do a food trial with a special hypoallergenic diet. Ask your vet about this.  You can always keep your dog on low dose steroids to decrease the allergic response.
