Feline Obesity

Question
Hi
I'm thinking of adopting a 2 year old Maine Coon through an ASPCA that is obese. I don't know any of the details about her other than she has a very loving temperment. I looked up on the internet about feline obesity and it almost scared me out of considering her when I saw some of the pics. All I know is they said she can't clean her fur (I guess that means her bottom ect). I wanted to know what all would I be taking on if I adopt her aside from the obvious nutrition aspect of helping her loose weight? Can they still walk to their litterbox if they are overweight?
Would I have to do a hygene shave on her and wipe her bottom area for her everytime she went? Please tell me all you can so I can make the decision as to whether I'm capable of helping her. I know that we can afford the medical care for her and also have plenty of love too but I wonder if that is enough???

Answer
My sincere apologies for the delay.  I have been dealing with some health issues and fallen terribly behind.

I have seen cats obese enough that they cannot groom their hind end.  With a Maine Coon obviously there would be some grooming necessary, though I would imagine in most cases a bit of trimming and twice weekly brushing would be enough.

I have seen very seriously obese cats able to walk, though will admit it more of a waddle, to the food dishes and litter box just fine so would doubt this mobility to be a big problem.  You will obviously have to be very strict with feeding and the more time you have to encourage interactive play the better.

If you have any further questions please feel free to let me know.  I think with patience and attention you would be able to make a big difference in this cat's life.
