Puppy Butt itch

Question
Hello, I have a 7 month old terrier mix male puppy. He is fixed and current on all vet care. Ever since I got him, at 8 weeks, every once and a while he will look at his butt and get scared and sometimes yelp. I have told my vet on several visits but they do not seem to think it needs addressing. I have had his anal glands expressed, as I thought it was likely that but he never scoots on the ground. He has been wormed and the vet said he does not know what it would be from and even seemed to ignore it. However, all the time I have had my pup he will experience this every once and a while. This is what happens, we will be playing or he will be sleeping...suddenly he will look at his butt and usually sit or stand up...tail is not completely but put between his legs....sometimes he will just run as if he was trying to get away from something...others he will sniff the area...others he will yelp. Then he will be fine. Lately it seems to be happening almost every day and while it may not be a life threatening issue it seems to bother him quite a bit. Do you have any ideas?

Answer
Something that is bothering him daily should be investigated. Who is to say that he doesn't have something in one of his anal glands, like a piece of dirt or a splinter or a sticker?

He would most likely have a discharge, but if he is having this problem all the time and there is no discharge, he needs to have it looked at.

You just have to be more insistent with the vet and have it really looked at. He may have to give him some sedatives to do it but if it uncovers the reason, then it is worth it.

So let him know that it is a concern and how often it happens and that you want it looked at. After all, you want the best for your pup. If he won't do anything then look for another vet to look at it. Your main vet doesn't have to know if you don't want him to.

But he needs to be less dismissive and check out this poor pups rear end!
