Question
I have an english bulldog that's 4. I just got a rescue bully (bully mix) and have had him a week. They told me he was in excellent health. He has had runny stools for a week now. Have you any suggestions on 'firming' his stools up? I'm hoping he doesn't have a pre-existing problem. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Cheryl!  I would definately recommend an initial vet visit to ensure that he is healthy.  Loose stools can be caused by an intestinal parasite (which, as you probably know are very common in pets!), a change in food, or just the stress of a new home.
Here is a recipe to firm up stools.
Boiled chicken and rice.  Just boil boneless, skinless chicken until done, adding no salt/pepper/spices to the chicken.  Mix with cooked white rice.  The chicken is very bland and will be easy on the digestive system and rice will work as a firming agent.
Dogs usually LOVE this recipe!
Feed this mixture for 3 days.  On the fourth day incorporate a bit of the dog food you are planning to keep him on.  Each day, add a bit more of the dog food to the boiled chicken and rice, and by the 7th day, he should be completely weaned onto the dog food.
If at any point you witness him vomiting, or blood in his stool, a prompt vet visit will be necessary, as this could be a sign that he ingested something he shouldn't have!  Other than that, as long as he is eating/drinking and is active, I wouldn't be too concerned and would just write it off as a little upset tummy or worms.  Please keep me posted and congrats on your new baby!
