Question
I have a three year old feline and I am considering getting her spayed. My main reason for doing so is because she has been notorious for urinating on my furniture. She doesn't do so because she can't access the litter box. I have caught her in the act and it seems she does so just for the heck of it. I was told by a friend that spaying her will eliminate the problem. Is this so?

Answer
Yes, spaying will most likely eliminate the behavior.  When females go into heat (spring thru fall) they have a tendency to mark their territory with urine.  Spaying is also important to reduce the risk of uterine infection, ovarian cancer and breast cancer.

It is also best to have a urine specimen checked to rule out any underlying urinary tract disease, including infection and crystals.

I would also make sure you have one more litter box than the number of cats and scoop the boxes daily.  Make certain food and water dishes are far away from litter boxes.  Clean the soiled areas with an enzymatic cleaner and place foil their to discourage repeat accidents.

FELIWAY is also something to consider using as it does help with urine marking.
