Stained fur around urethra- follow up

Question
QUESTION: My female 4 1/2 month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has the fur around the urethra stained a dark brown color.  Is this normal?

ANSWER: Any part of the dog that comes in contact with saliva or urine or tears will stain a reddish color due to the iron content in a dogs blood. For some reason it's only dogs that seem to do this to the degree that you see it, but it happens to cats also that tear a lot or lick a lot.
It's basically the saliva that causes it but urine will also stain their hair.

QUESTION: Ok, so now besides the staining she has like a brown-reddish debris around it, that sometimes dries up and falls.  Should I be concerned with this?

Answer
That sounds like the oils from her skin in the area that cake up with dirt and then falls away. That is also normal but if there is a lot of that then you should have the vet look her over. Some dogs have overactive glands that will produce a lot of skin oils.

She would get more of this if she is outside a lot also. Dirt will cake to the oils and cause that. Like I said, however if there is a lot, then the glands themselves might be pretty active.
