Cat pee!

Question
My boyfriend and I just recently got a cat who is approx. 1 year old.  She was in heat when we got her 13 days ago, and in the first few days, behaved very well, using the litter box, etc.  In the past five days she has peed on our furniture about five or six times that we know of.  What's going on?  She defacates in the litterbox, but no longer pees in it.

Answer
Hi Carmody!  Congrats on your new baby girl!  Firstly, I would like to say that getting her spayed will be a great idea.  Not only does it eliminate unwanted kittens in shelters, but it also decreases the chance of mammary and uteran cancer by 98% and eliminates any chance of developing a severe, common, and often times fatal uteran infection called a Pyometra.  It will also eliminate heat, crying to go outside and aggression.
Your kitty may be urinating outside the litterbox due to a behavioral problem from going into heat.  I would not suspect this to be the number one reason, as the number one reason for urination outside the litter box in all felines is a urinary tract infection.  I would definately take her to your veterinarian for an initial checkup and to be tested for a urinary tract infection.  This is easily treated with antibiotics.  Once on the antibiotics for approximately two days, she should stop urinating outside the box.
I hope that this answers your question and if you have any others, please feel free to ask!
Give your new baby some kisses for me!
