cat doesnt eat or drink for two days

Question
Two months ago we moved to Florida from NY. My cat was constantly licking and pulling her hair (she is a long hair cat). Now, for the past two days she's been letargic, doesn't eat or drink and every once in a while lets out a loud meaw. I haven't seen her going to the bathroom either. She walks only a few paces and then colapses. When not sleeping she seems alert. I'm totally puzzled. Can you help? Thanks.
Jo

Answer
Hi Jo!  Any time a pet is not eating or drinking, they need to see a veterinarian ASAP, as an animal will never not eat/drink unless very ill.
There are a few possibilities of what may be ailing her that I can pinpoint from the symptoms you have described.
Infection is always a concern.  Being that she is collapsing and lacking energy, she may have a fever.  Severe Urinary Tract Infections can cause these kinds of symptoms and would be a common ailment to any kitty.
If this is an older cat, renal failure is always a possibility, as that is the most common disease older kitties get.
If your cat is not spayed, it would be very likely that this would be a Pyometra.  A pyometra is a dangerous and serious uteran infection that needs veterinary attention immediately.  An emergency spay would be in order, along with some heavy duty antibiotics.
A toxicity is also a possibility.  Are there any ant/rat mouse traps around that contain poisons?  Have you put any over the counter flea prevention on her like Zodiac, BioSpot, Advantage, Revolution, (anything but Frontline)ect?  These flea prevention products are known to cause these symptoms.  If you have put it on her within 24 hours, wash her very thoroughly with Dawn Dish Detergent (which is a degreaser and will remove any excess of the product) and take her to the vet immediately.
There is also the chance that she has eaten something that she shouldn't have or that she is constipated.  This would cause a blockage/obstruction in the intestinal tract in which you may also see some vomiting.
When you mentioned that you have not see her go to the bathroom, which did you mean? Urination or defecation?  There are urinary blockages/obstructions that are very common and prevalent in male cats, but this can also happen to females, just not as common.  These symptoms also coincide with this.
The list goes on.  There are so many cat ailments and mystery illnesses that have been recorded when dealing with felines.  The above are the ailments that I have seen coincide with the symptoms you have explained, most commonly.
Not eating and drinking can cause serious dehydration and organ damage.  Be sure to get her to the vet ASAP.
Please let me know how she is doing!
