Euthanasia of an old dog

Question
I have a 12 yr. old Labrador.  She has been moving slowly for the past several months.  Just in the last two days, she has gotten worse.  She eats, but the weight just drops off of her.  She stumbles when she walks, and moves slow.  Sometimes she seems confused.  She doesn't seem to be suffering when she's laying or sleeping.  How do you know when to help them let go?  She eats small amounts and urinates, etc.  Thank you in advance for your advice.

Answer
I generally tell clients when the bad days outweigh the good it is time to consider euthanasia.  It is the QUALITY of life that really matters, not quantity.  In this case, it sounds like it is probably time to let go.

There is medication for cognitive dysfunction called Anipryl that you could try as well as putting her on prescription diet B/D to help with the confusion.  There are also new joint supplements and arthritis medications that help older dogs too.  But nothing is going to make her like a puppy again.

Best bet is to take her to your vet for an examination and his/her opinion on her current condition and if medication will help at this point.

Best wishes.
