What makes my dog lick so much?

Question
I have a little 11lb. 9yr. old rat terrier who is licking constantly.  She is either licking her front legs or just licking her lips.  That little tongue is going constantly!  I just wonder if there's something wrong with her.  What are the symtoms of throat cancer?  I hope to God that's not it because this dog is my life!  Please help me!

Answer
Hi Cindy!  Licking is definitely associated with itching.  She may have either developed an allergy to something (food, new laundry detergent, ect.) or she may have just one little flea (one flea is all it takes to cause itchiness!) or another external parasite.  I would definitely have your vet take a look at her.  There are many ointments and topical sprays that can be prescribed to relieve itching.
I hope this helps,
Hilary
