My dog ate part of a ham bone

Question
Hi Hilary,

After Easter dinner, my medium size dog, Keesha, got hold of the bone left from the ham. She ate all the meat off the bone and managed to eat a large part of the bone itself before we caught her. She has not been able to make a solid movement since Sunday, and she has vomitted several times. Does this issue just need time to sort itself out, or should I seek the help of our veterinarian? Is there some type of laxative that could help her?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Answer
Hi Mark.  Unfortunately, since she is vomitting and unable to make a solid bm, this means that the bone is lodged somewhere within her intestinal tract.  A veterinary visit is a must and surgical intervention will most likely be needed.  It is very important to have your dog checked out ASAP by your veterinarian before the bone begins to cause internal tearing and bleeding. The longer it's in there, the worse her condition will be. Please let me know how she does!
