Question
HI,
About 2 months ago we took our cat Cleo to the vet because her eye was tearing, one side of her face swelled and she appeared to be having trouble breathing. Sniffly, snorting and slurping  The vet said she had an infected tooth and gave us clindacure to give her 25mg daily.  And some ointment for her eye.
A week later,we took her back for a follow up. she sounded better at that time.  The vet pulled the tooth and we continued to give her the clindacure. The instructions said to give until finished.  After it was gone, she seem better.  A couple weeks after that she  starting tearing again and everything started again.  We took her back to the vet and he said she is to be on the clindacure for the rest of her life. That sound wrong to us.  It doesn't seem to be helping much this time...
Are there conditions where a cat will be on an antibiotic forever?
 Thanks...

Answer
Did she have all of her teeth cleaned?  If not, that is the next step.  If any of the teeth have pockets around them (gum recession), then they too should be removed too.

I would also recommend blood work to check for any underlying problems as well as x-rays of her sinuses and chest to see what's going on internally.

The only time I will keep an animal on antibiotics long-term is if they are very, very old and the owner does not want to risk the pet going under anesthesia for the dental or the pet is severely immunocompromised.

I probably would suggest a second opinion...sounds also like a change of antibiotic is in order...Clavamox is a good antibiotic for dental infections.
