Great Dane Skin Allergy ?

Question
Hi,

Our 6 year old Male Dane (Merle) has an exaggerated case of skin lesions on his paws, jowles, and now showing up on the outside skin of his penis.   He has had this issue on his jowles since he was a pup.  The feet showed up around age 2 and was diagnosed as hyper thyroid.   The medicine (seloxine as well as natural thyroid) he has been taking for the hyper thyroid have been working well until recently.   However we have noticed a trend of outbreaks during the spring over the last two years, and it appears to be recurring this year.   We are now wondering if our boy has allergies of some sort that could be causing these outbreaks.

We were able to control his puppy acne (to a certain extent - except for the Springtime issue we are now exploring) by being vigilant about washing his metal food & water bowls.

We have already gone through the food issue.   He eats Natural Balance Vegetarian kibble and Natural Balance canned Lamb & Rice and due to his GI issues, this is the only diet that works for him and has been recommended by several allergists as the best option.

We appreciate any help or direction you can give us.
Thank You

Answer
It would be very unusual to have a 2 year old dog with hypothyroidism (not hyper).  So I would have him re-tested to be sure.

Also, he can be tested for environmental allergies with a blood test, so ask your vet to do that.  Since this appears to be seasonal (spring) he may only need treatment for a short time.
