Cat twitches

Question
My neutered quarter Siamese cat is coming up to 12, fit, eating well, glossy coat and with absolutely no previous health problems.  Over the past few weeks I have noticed that he occasionally twitches - a tiny jump (a bit like the humans sometimes do just before going to sleep). This doesn't distress him at all and I don't want to put him through the stress of a car-ride to the vet if there is nothing to worry about - but he is the 'child of the family' so - is this a common thing in older cats, or should I get him checked out?

Answer
It probably is nothing serious albeit this is not totally normal to see this.  Since he is 12 years old and a pure-breed I would recommend some routine blood tests to screen for any underlying health problems. Older cats are very prone to kidney disease--not that this is a typical presentation, but catching it before he is sick from it will allow proper treatment and greatly extend his life.  Abnormal electrolyte levels such as low potassium or low calcium can cause twitching.  You can try giving him RESCUE REMEDY to see if that would help reduce any underlying stress or anxiety that he may be having.  You may want to even consider consulting a chiropractor as he may have a subluxation.
