Question
My little dog is almost 13 yrs. old and tomorrow she has to go into have some teeth removed and the others cleaned.  She has never had this done before and she will have to be under anethesia.
My question is this: she has never had problems being put under before but it has been a very long time since she has had to under go surgery, I am so afraid of losing her.  Is it very high risk to have this done?  She is in a lot of pain.
Thank you,
Connie

Answer
She should have blood work done before anesthesia to ensure that her organs are functioning properly.  She should also have an IV catheter and fluids running during anesthesia.  Dental disease, when untreated, can do serious harm to the heart, liver and kidneys.  Therefore, it is better to get the teeth cleaned and the rotten teeth pulled to ensure she stays healthy.  She should be sent home on antibiotics and pain medication after the procedure.  I am sure she will be in some discomfort, however, her mouth will be a lot healthier.
