Dog chewing feet and tail

Question
I have a 6 year old Beagle. We live in Mobile, AL - the allergy capitol of the world! Anyway, I am recently unemployed and that is why I can't afford to take my dog to the vet right now and appreciate your advice so much. This year, the pollen is heavier than ever and I think that is why for the first time, my Beagle is chewing his tail right where it hooks on to his body on top and his feet so much. There is redness all around his tail and he scratches himself crazy...and me too. I have in the past given the steroid treatment for itchy dogs but, as I say, can't afford much right now. Are there any over-the- counter products that could help with his itchiness? Or any herbal solutions? What can I put on his red spot on his tail? Any help is so appreciated. Thanks for helping those who need it. I am a very good pet owner and have spent thousands of dollars over the years on my beloved pets. All have lived very long and happy lives. I am moving soon back to Colorado where allergies are not so bad. Again, thanks for any help you can give me.  Sincerely, Leslee

Answer
I'm in Montgomery and I learned about dog allergies living here.

Keeping the dog indoors really helps a dog that has a seasonal allergy.  When you take the dog out for a walk, try and stay off of the grass. If you will bathe the dog often that will remove alot of the pollens.  Even rinsing with the hose helps. Flea control is essential for a dog in our area.  I recommend Frontline applied monthly.

As far as taking the itch away, call your vet and ask for him/her to call in a refill of the prescription of prednisone for you.  That is a very cheap steroid. You can also add Omega3 fatty acids to the food each day, which will make the skin less likely to react to the pollens.  That may take a month or so to take effect.  And if there is any secondary infection on the skin, that also itches, so the infection has to be dealt with.  Good luck. (There are also allergic dogs even in Colorado, unless you live above the tree line)
