I have a 13 1/2 yr old. rottweiller.  She does have severe arthritis and takes madication for it.  The only time she does not do heavy panting is when she is in a deep sleep.  Is her heavy panting a sign of pain that she may be in?  She very rarely cries but I am told that large dogs generally do not show their pain.
Answer -
Hi Penny!  It does sound as though the panting could be due to pain.  Arthritis is definately a very painful disease in animals and humans alike.  What medication is she on for the arthritis?  I have a few medications I could suggest and some holistic pills (over the counter) that work wonders. I had my border collie on them until she passed away at age 18, and I feel as though they absolutely saved her life and kept her going.  She once couldn't make it up the stairs, but after some time on these pills she was running up and down the steps with no pain at all. If you are interested, please let me know and include your dog's approximate weight for dosage purposes!  Thanks!
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Hilary

Dutchess is 104 lbs. and is currently on Rimadyl, Glucosamine and Bufferin. Today I purchased her Syn-flex to see how that works.

Answer
Hi there!  If you are willing to try some holistic over the counter meds that can be found at your local health food store, they may be quite helpful. The pills are Sharkfat Pills and Boevine Cartlidge.  You can give one pill per day.  A tablespoon of Flax Seed Oil per day over her food will keep her joints and organs well lubricated and relieve the pain of joints rubbing together.
I hope this is helpful and let me know how she does!
Give her some kisses for me!
Hilary
