Question
Hello Hilary!

My big, orange Maine Coon cat has black specks in the white fur under his chin.  They are tiny, loose specks that I can pull out.  When I investigate futher into the fur, there seem to be a TON of them.  Do you think he just has a dirty chin, or might this be a more serious skin condition?

Tahnks for you insight!
KMM

Answer
Hi Kristin!  This sounds like a very common ailment that effects many, many house cats.  It's called Feline Acne.  This is a bacterial skin infection that can be caused by numerous things, but occurs most commonly by the use of plastic bowls.  If you are using plastic bowls, switching to a different material, like metal may be beneficial.
You can keep his chin clean with a warm soapy cloth every day (rinsing well of course!).
If the problem persists, you may want to see your veterinarian.  Cephalexin is the most commonly used antibiotic for this ailment.  Usually this will cure itself.
I hope this helps!
